I wanted to make asphalt perfume because I like the smell of it. I brought some pieces of asphalt into the kitchen to try to extract the “essential oil” (asphalt is a petroleum product). In the kitchen it became disgusting, and the fumes made us nauseous.
The kitchen has been a way for us to get closer to material and feel its presence, and we feel toxicity in a more visceral way inside the kitchen vs on the street.
Melting asphalt in the kitchen is not recommended.
Asphalt is all over the world in roads, and is a common roofing material.
